Additional 1% of income tax to be ringfenced for carbon emission offsetting — 8 signatures. Status: open.
We propose that 1% of everyone’s income over the £12, 750 tax threshold should be used every month for carbon emission offsetting. This portion of money should be allocated towards recycling schemes, green energy programs, replanting forests, etc.
We believe this will in turn benefit the net zero carbon scheme by offsetting carbon emissions, in turn, bringing individual emissions closer to the target of 5.0 tonnes annually. Local communities, councils and Parliament would be able to vote on which offsetting activities take place and the overall relevance of the enacted schemes will be reviewed annually while revising the carbon offsetting tax.
