Introduce statutory regulation and professional registration for currently unregulated NHS healthcare workers, including healthcare assistants, theatre support workers and patient-facing porters, with porters, with enforceable conduct standards and independent fitness-to-practise investigations.
Healthcare support workers care for vulnerable patients, yet many are not subject to independent professional regulation. We believe the Government should mandate statutory regulation, which includes upholding enforceable standards of conduct, safeguarding and integrity, both at work and outside work where behaviour raises fitness-to-practise concerns. An independent regulator should be responsible for investigating serious misconduct, protect patients and prevent unsafe individuals moving between employers, while ensuring fair investigations.
