End the BBC Royal Charter & make it a voluntary subscription-funded service — 18 signatures. Status: open.
Do not renew or replace the BBC Royal Charter when it expires on 31 December 2027. Reject any plans to turn the licence fee into a streaming tax or a universal household levy. Allow the BBC to change into a voluntary, subscription-funded service instead.
The BBC Royal Charter ends in late 2027. The Government is looking at new ways to fund the BBC. This potentially includes a streaming tax on streaming service platforms. We believe people should only pay for the media they choose to watch & that forcing households to pay a fee to use independent streaming platforms is unfair. We also believe that the television licence fee is an outdated system & that the Government should protect consumers from new digital taxes. The Government should let the Charter expire. The BBC should compete fairly in the open market using voluntary subscriptions.
