Raise the Age of Consent to 18 in England and Wales — 15 signatures. Status: open.
I believe 16 and 17 is too young. Teenagers at these ages are still developing emotionally, mentally and socially, learning about relationships, boundaries, responsibility and consequences. They are still minors, not legal adults.
Why is the age of consent 16 when alcohol and tobacco are 18? This matters for all young people, including neurodivergent children. Some need extra support understanding social cues, spotting manipulation and setting boundaries. Neurodivergence does not mean they cannot understand consent just that their needs matter. Young people may be curious yet lack full knowledge of risks and pressure. Turning 16 does not equal maturity. This is about protection, not shame. A legal age doesn’t = readiness.
