Require sunset clauses and evidence-based reviews for certain new laws — 12 signatures. Status: open.
Require all new laws and regulations that place a duty, obligation or requirements to include a sunset clause so they automatically expire after 5–7 years unless Parliament votes to renew them following a published evidence-based review of their costs, benefits and effectiveness.
We want all new laws and regulations that place a duty, obligation or requirement on people to include a sunset clause, so they automatically expire after 5–7 years. They should only remain in law if Parliament votes to renew them after a published review of whether they worked, their costs and benefits, and the burden on people and businesses. Core constitutional, criminal justice and emergency measures could be exempted. We think this would stop outdated rules lasting forever and make regulation more evidence-based.
