Introduce targeted income/NI tax relief for self-employed taxi and PHV drivers. High unavoidable costs mean £40k turnover can leave only ~£25.5k after £10k expenses and taxes. Drivers renting licensed vehicles can face even higher fixed costs.

Additional details

Taxi and PHV drivers can face unusually high unavoidable costs just to earn. A driver turning over £40,000 may spend £10,000 on fuel, insurance, licensing, maintenance and vehicle costs, yet existing tax relief only reduces the tax/NI bill by a fraction of that spend. Rental drivers can lose even more to fixed weekly costs. Tax-deductible does not mean reimbursed. We want Government to review this burden and introduce targeted tax relief or allowances so licensed drivers can earn a fairer net income.
