Require safety nets or protective covers over all zoo animal enclosures — 23 signatures. Status: open.
Make safety nets or equally effective protective covers mandatory over all zoo animal enclosures, to prevent visitors falling, jumping or climbing in and stop objects being thrown at animals. Work with devolved governments to introduce consistent protections across the UK.
Zoo safety should protect both visitors and animals. Enclosures should prevent people, including children and those who may not recognise danger, from falling, jumping or climbing inside. Animals also need protection from objects thrown by visitors. We want mandatory overhead safety nets or equally effective protective covers, designed for each species without compromising animal welfare, alongside secure barriers, regular inspections and enforcement.
