Grant increased rights to UK citizens by descent to pass on citizenship — 17 signatures. Status: open.
We call on the Government to grant UK citizens by descent increased rights to pass on UK citizenship. We think that if they have lived in the UK at some point, they should be able to pass citizenship to children born abroad without relying on three years of UK residency.
Crucially, a child’s citizenship should depend solely on the British parent’s status, not on the non-British parent. In our view, citizens by descent have fewer rights than other British citizens because they cannot easily pass on nationality. We therefore call on the Government to change this, allow citizens by descent to upgrade their status after UK residency, remove the three-year rule, and ensure equal rights for all British citizens.
