Remove the 20% VAT on all veterinary medical treatments and diagnostic tests — 7 signatures. Status: open.
We want the Government to exempt, or apply a zero rate of VAT to, veterinary medical treatments, surgeries, medicines and diagnostic tests. We believe veterinary care is an essential medical necessity, not a luxury commercial service, and should not be taxed as an unavoidable consumer expense.
Currently, human medical care is exempt from VAT but veterinary care attracts 20% VAT. We think this creates an unfair financial penalty on regular families trying to keep their animals healthy. While many commercial farms and other VAT-registered businesses can reclaim VAT on veterinary costs, most pet owners and many animal welfare charities cannot reclaim this VAT. We believe that paying a 20% tax on life-saving surgeries, diagnostics, and medications essentially treats animal healthcare as a luxury consumer service and the Government should stop it.
