Protect Healthcare Access for Children of Disabled Parents

Protect Healthcare Access for Children of Disabled Parents — 11 signatures. Status: open.

Petition background

Review accessible pathways of NHS healthcare providers for children and young people under 18, whose disabled or housebound parent/carer cannot accompany them. Home visits, remote consultations, communication support and access to an appropriately trained support person should be provided if needed.

Additional details

Disabled and housebound parents can face barriers to taking their children to healthcare appointments. Some children, particularly those with autism, ADHD, disabilities or communication needs, may be unable to safely or effectively attend alone. This can result in delayed or missed care, untreated illness and safeguarding risks. A parent's disability should never become a barrier to their child's access to healthcare.
