Introduce a maximum NHS waiting time for risk-reducing mastectomy — 19 signatures. Status: open.
Introduce a maximum NHS waiting time of 12 months for people who have been approved for risk-reducing mastectomy because they are at very high risk of developing breast cancer.
People at very high genetic risk of breast cancer can choose risk-reducing mastectomy, yet may face long waits for surgery. I have a BRCA1 mutation and waited 16 months for mine. Breast cancer was unexpectedly found in the tissue removed during my operation. I believe people undergoing surgery specifically to reduce their cancer risk should not face prolonged waits during which that risk remains. A 12-month maximum would provide a clear national standard and greater certainty for patients.
