Do not fund the BBC through a compulsory broadband levy — 8 signatures. Status: rejected.
We want the Government to rule out any compulsory BBC charge on broadband, mobile internet or other internet services. People should not be forced to fund the BBC simply because they need internet access, especially if they do not use BBC services.
The Government has said future BBC funding should minimise cost of living pressures and keep household costs as low as possible. It has also said it is not considering a new tax on households. A compulsory internet levy would go against those principles. Many people do not use BBC services and may need that money for food, energy and other essentials. Internet access is essential for work, banking, healthcare and public services, and should not be used to force people to fund the BBC.
