I’m not surprised by Shabana Mahmood’s statement this morning after the RAF Fairford incident. I accept that investigations are ongoing and that there are limits to what can responsibly be said at this stage. But that cannot become an excuse for a wider lack of transparency and accountability

More broadly, I believe the Government’s handling of crime and illegal immigration raises serious questions about Shabana Mahmood’s record as Home Secretary. The Home Secretary holds one of the most important offices in Government. The public should expect responsibility, decisive action and accountability when serious issues arise. If Shabana Mahmood is unwilling or unable to provide that leadership, then the Prime Minister should replace her.
