Create a single national portal for all road tolls and emission zones. This should allow drivers to register once for automatic nationwide Direct Debit payments, or opt-in for email/SMS reminders before penalty charges are issued.
In our view motorists face a confusing patchwork of payment systems for tolls and emission zones. We believe most drivers intend to pay, but genuine mistakes happen when forced to juggle multiple portals. We think that if authorities can seamlessly check the DVLA to issue a Penalty Charge Notice, they can check a central system to take a Direct Debit or send a reminder first. A single national portal could help eradicate accidental non-payment, simplify travel, and reduce long-term administrative costs.
