Require police forces to give every officer mandatory accredited training on autism and learning disabilities, including approaches to missing people with autism. Mandate cards and a sensory bag in every police vehicle.
We are concerned that people with autism & learning disabilities are often misunderstood by police. Communication & sensory differences can look like non-compliance. Training is inconsistent. Health staff have mandatory autism & learning disability training; police do not. Communication cards & a simple sensory bag in every car could help officers communicate & calm someone in crisis.
