Fund employment security buffer for all working and tax paying adults — 9 signatures. Status: open.
We think that a small, defined portion of the taxes people already pay should be ring-fenced and attributed to them individually, building up over time as a dedicated reserve in case they lose their job. This should not be a new tax, but instead funded via their current tax contribution.
In our view, by funding such a buffer, when a person loses their job, they will not immediately fall into uncertainty of how to secure an income. Instead, they will be able to first draw upon their own Employment Security Buffer—a fund built gradually through their working life—before accessing wider state support if needed. We think this system could be administered via an Employment Security Buffer account set up for each individual eligible, administered through existing tax infrastructure.
