Mandate the term "Care Experienced" in all public sector communications

Mandate the term "Care Experienced" in all public sector communications — 12 signatures. Status: open.

Petition background

We call on the government to mandate the term "Care Experienced" across all professional and legal terminology in public sector communications. We feel that "Care Leaver" has a negative connotation to it which for many reinforces the feelings that no one cares.

Additional details

We feel the term "care leaver" implies care has left us, creating a cliff-edge where support ends. As recent reports on deaths of those leaving care tragically show, it truly feels like care abandons us. We believe there needs to be a language shift that doesn't apply a negative narrative to the Care Experienced Young Person. Language shapes reality. Shifting to "Care Experienced" restores dignity, recognises resilience, and tackles the systemic neglect that leaves vulnerable people isolated.”
