We want the Government to make deliberate parental alienation a specific criminal offence. The Government should also launch a review into laws such as the Children Act 1989 and other laws to examine any gaps and recognising deliberate parental relationship abuse as a form of psychological abuse.
The Children Act 1989 and subsequent legislation provide family-law remedies but no specific offence for deliberate parental alienation. While the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and Serious Crime Act 2015 can cover some controlling or coercive conduct, we feel neither specifically addresses deliberate destruction of a parent-child relationship. We believe the Government should close this gap with a proportionate, evidence-based offence and safeguards for genuine safeguarding concerns.
