Petition background

Change the school attendance penalty system so that a child’s overall attendance record must be considered before parents are fined for taking them on a short family holiday during term time. Persistent non-attendance remains a much bigger concern.

Additional details

We call on the Government to change school attendance fines. Parents of children with good attendance should not be automatically fined for a short family holiday. We wholeheartedly support protecting key exam and assessment periods, when holidays should not be taken. Outside these times, overall attendance should count. Focus fines on persistent, unjustified absence not responsible families taking a few days together.
