End Prime Ministers’ power to nominate resignation honours and peerages — 14 signatures. Status: open.
End the convention allowing departing Prime Ministers to nominate resignation honours and life peerages. Replace it with a transparent, fully independent process based on demonstrated public service, not loyalty or proximity to a political leader.
Resignation lists allow departing Prime Ministers to recommend advisers, political colleagues and associates for honours and life peerages, regardless of how briefly they served. Even when recipients are deserving, this creates an appearance of personal or political patronage. Life peerages ordinarily confer membership of Parliament and influence over legislation, potentially for life. Honours and parliamentary membership should reflect public service, not loyalty or political proximity.
