Allow children up to 5 days of authorised term-time holiday each school year. This would make family breaks more affordable, support children’s mental health and wellbeing, and provide valuable family time, while keeping good attendance and education a priority.
Current rules can unfairly affect families who cannot afford peak school-holiday prices or whose jobs restrict when they can take leave. Travel can also give children new cultural, social and educational experiences. A 5-day allowance would recognise that learning and development happen outside the classroom too, while giving families greater choice, reducing financial pressure and supporting a healthier balance between school and family life.
