Review religious slaughter exemptions under the Animal Sentience Act 2022

Review religious slaughter exemptions under the Animal Sentience Act 2022 — 8 signatures. Status: rejected.

Petition background

“Recognising animals as sentient beings, change the law to require all animals slaughtered in the UK to be effectively stunned before slaughter, ending religious exemptions that permit slaughter without prior stunning.”

Additional details

The Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022 recognises animals as sentient beings capable of experiencing pain and suffering. We believe this principle should be reflected consistently in slaughter law. We are asking the Government to end religious exemptions from standard stunning requirements and require effective stunning before slaughter, so animal welfare is prioritised regardless of the method of slaughter.
