The government must reopen Hammersmith Bridge to cars and buses

The government must reopen Hammersmith Bridge to cars and buses — 9 signatures. Status: rejected.

Petition background

TfL and the local authorities have failed to get Hammersmith bridge reopened to traffic in eight years, causing severe excess traffic levels in adjacent parts of London. Only government can now sort out this mess: Parliament must decide.

Additional details

Traffic in London has increased substantially over the last three decades meaning each river crossing is extremely busy. When crossings like Hammersmith Bridge, or Albert Bridge are permanently closed, the traffic flow becomes appreciably slower as they reroute to the nearest alternative crossing. Usually it is for the local authorities and TfL to resolve these challenges. But after nearly eight years there is no agreement. It should now be a matter for government to resolve.
