Mandate reducing leaks & protecting the environment for water surge-pricing — 7 signatures. Status: open.
The Government should introduce minimum requirements for water companies before they are permitted to implement surge-pricing for water bills, which include not breaching any environmental regulations in place, and reducing leaks to no more than 5% of total daily water supply.
Water companies are considering surge-pricing, which would lead to consumers being charged more during periods of drought. We believe this should not be allowed if their infrastructure suffers from significant leaks. It was found that South East Water is estimated to be losing around 20% of its daily supply to leaks. Consumers should not have to pay more if they are losing that amount of water. There is also evidence of water companies breaching environmental regulations. We believe that if they breach or have breached them, companies should not be allowed to enact surge-pricing measures.
