Pass a law that requires the consent of 51% of local residents to approve a planning application for a development that affects them. If a majority of local residents oppose the application, it must be rejected and any appeal should solely go back to residents.
Under this law, it should be mandated that their decision must not be overridden by any person or body, local or national. We feel our current planning laws provide no way for residents to have the final say on planning. They can voice their opinions to the local authority. The local authority may on occasion reject it. But then, the appeal for a planning application can be overturned by the Planning Inspectorate, a body acting on behalf of the Secretary of State. We want this to stop and to ensure that those affected by the building have the final say, no-one else. This could bring planning power back to residents.
