Require the Home Office to publish standardised, value-for-money assessments before approving new asylum accommodation. This should compare all suitable options and explain any possible decision to not select the option offering taxpayers the best overall value.
We support a fair distribution of asylum accommodation across the country. An area’s affluence should neither exclude it nor justify spending more taxpayer money. Assessments should compare whole-life costs, including acquisition, adaptation, security, transport and impact on local services. Safety, suitability and residents’ welfare should remain essential. Where a costlier option is selected, the Government should publish its reasons. Fair distribution and responsible spending should go together.
