Mandate the teaching of Anglo-Indian history in the curriculum

Mandate the teaching of Anglo-Indian history in the curriculum — 8 signatures. Status: open.

Petition background

We believe Anglo-Indians, the mixed-race community formed as a result of the British Raj, have made a monumental contribution to the UK. Yet, we feel they are almost invisible today. We are calling for the Government to make it compulsory for schools to teach about Anglo-Indian history.

Additional details

Anglo-Indians are the mixed-race community formed during the British Raj and earlier. Tens of thousands of Anglo-Indians arrived in the UK after 1947. Many of the women becoming nurses around the inception of the NHS. Yet for many, all they met in the UK was racism and prejudice which lead many, including my Grandad, to hide their heritage. We feel they are almost invisible today. We believe Anglo-Indians should be recognised as an important part of the UK's post-war Asian migration and their history should be taught.
