Protect the Public: Reform the Prison System to Reduce Reoffending

Protect the Public: Reform the Prison System to Reduce Reoffending — 7 signatures. Status: rejected.

Petition background

We want the Government to reform prisons and probation to prioritise public safety and reduce reoffending, including secure facilities for high-risk offenders, rehabilitation and employment programmes for lower-risk offenders, and stronger consequences for persistent reoffending.

Additional details

Prisons are overcrowded and reoffending remains high. We want Government to prioritise public safety by managing offenders according to risk. High-risk offenders should have secure specialist management, while suitable lower-risk offenders should receive rehabilitation, education, treatment and employment support. Persistent reoffenders should face stronger consequences. We want evidence-based reform that reduces reoffending, protects the public and saves taxpayers’ money.
