Halt the building data centres in the UK until further environmental planning — 21 signatures. Status: rejected.
Much of the UK is experiencing the worst drought in decades. Despite the wettest winter in since the 1800s in some parts of the UK, out water companies have failed to keep up the infrastructure required to avoid hosepipe bans. New data centre builds are set to triple water usage already allocated.
We need the government to seriously reconsider their decision to go ahead with 100 new data centres across the UK. Our current infrastructure is not prepared for the impact of increased water usage, with our rapidly changing weather patterns. New data centres will deplete water supply intended for agricultural and public use. In a time where investment should be put into preparedness for potential of water shortages, they are choosing the big data instead of us. This is not okay.
