Ban Politicians from Profiting off Social Media Engagement

Ban Politicians from Profiting off Social Media Engagement — 15 signatures. Status: open.

Petition background

Prohibit MPs and elected public officials from earning financial income - including ad revenue, creator pay-outs, platform subscriptions, and brand deals - from social media platforms while holding public office, ensuring public service remains focused on constituents rather than private profit.

Additional details

Politics and social media monetization should never be mingled. Under current rules, elected representatives can profit from online algorithms that reward sensationalism, creating a direct conflict of interest. The sole duty of Members of Parliament must be public service, not generating revenue through digital platforms. We call on the Government and House of Commons to amend parliamentary rules and ban all sitting MPs from earning ad revenue, creator pay-outs, and sponsorships online.
