It is time for Parliament to review the way Universal Credit and other means-tested benefits are assessed. Financial support should reflect an individual’s own earnings and needs, rather than penalising people simply because they have a partner.

Universal Credit and other means-tested benefits should be assessed on an individual’s income, not their partner’s. Many people are denied support despite having no personal income, leaving them unable to pay bills, rent, council tax, NHS prescriptions or dental costs. The current system unfairly assumes a working partner can financially support another adult. Benefits should reflect individual circumstances to provide fairer support.
