Reduce the six-week summer holiday to four weeks. Use one week to extend the Christmas break and the other to lengthen a half-term or create a new mid-year break. Keep the same total holiday entitlement while better supporting families, pupils and schools.
The current six-week summer break was introduced during a time when many children were needed to help with agricultural work. Today's society has changed significantly, yet the school calendar has remained largely the same. A more balanced distribution of holidays would provide several benefits -Reduce learning loss, Support working families, Improve pupil wellbeing, Provide a longer Christmas break, Boost tourism year-round
