As someone who has worked with children for over 10 years, I have seen how much joy simple experiences like sitting in a fire engine can bring. For generations, firefighters have been seen as caring, approachable role models who inspire children and strengthen community trust. While safety policies are important, there should also be room for common sense and compassion, especially when a small act of kindness creates a lifelong memory for a child facing serious illness. Disciplining firefighters for gestures like this risks discouraging the very qualities the public values most: kindness, empathy, and community spirit. We call on Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to review its approach and ensure that compassion remains at the heart of public service.
