We call on the UK Government and Parliament to introduce a duty of accountability requiring elected representatives to provide accurate, relevant answers to questions from Parliament and the public, rather than avoiding scrutiny through misleading statements or irrelevant responses.
Democratic accountability depends on elected representatives answering questions honestly and meaningfully. Politicians should be free to debate and express opinions, but factual questions should receive clear, relevant and evidence-based responses. This petition seeks stronger standards requiring representatives to address the substance of questions, distinguish fact from opinion, acknowledge uncertainty and avoid deliberate evasion or misleading statements.
