Stop unnecessary delays for 16-year-olds with T1D applying for driving licences — 21 signatures. Status: rejected.
When someone applies online for a provisional driving licence and declares Type 1 diabetes, the DVLA should automatically issue the relevant medical questionnaire immediately. There is no reason for applicants to wait months simply to receive a form that is required in every case.
Young people with Type 1 diabetes already manage the daily demands of a lifelong medical condition. Avoidable admin delays add extra stress. Sending the DIAB1 questionnaire as soon as an application is submitted would allow the medical assessment to begin without delay, reducing processing times. A provisional driving licence is also an important form of ID for many 16-year-olds, particularly those who do not have a passport. Delays can prevent young people from proving their identity or age.
