Enforce a duty of care on the Home Office for communities hosting asylum seekers

Enforce a duty of care on the Home Office for communities hosting asylum seekers — 6 signatures. Status: rejected.

Petition background

The Home Office should have a legal duty of care to communities where asylum accommodation is provided. This should include assessing local impacts, consulting residents and councils, and ensuring services, infrastructure and public safety are properly considered before placements are made.

Additional details

The Home Office can place large numbers of asylum seekers into communities without any legal duty to assess the impact on local residents. We believe it should be required to carry out community impact assessments, consult local authorities and residents, consider pressures on public services, and publish mitigation plans before accommodation is approved. This would improve transparency, accountability and public confidence.
