Introduce legislation ensuring local authorities cannot ban or restrict the promotion of events relating to protected characteristics – like Pride or Black History Month – in public spaces. Local councils must not weaponise "neutrality" rules to erase or censor diverse communities from public life.
Heritage months, cultural awareness events, and diversity initiatives are about education, visibility, and community cohesion. They are not "ideological" or "partisan" positions. Restricting the celebration and support of these lawful events isolates local residents and restricts free expression. The Government must clarify that local authorities cannot weaponise "neutrality" policies to erase or censor marginalized communities from public life.
