Keep Blackpool's Council - Stop the Merger

Keep Blackpool's Council - Stop the Merger — 14 signatures. Status: rejected.

Petition background

Keep Blackpool as a standalone unitary council. We call on the Government to reject any reorganisation that abolishes Blackpool Council and merges it into a larger Lancashire authority, so the town keeps direct, accountable representation answering to Blackpool residents alone.

Additional details

Blackpool has been its own unitary council for 25+ years. Its councillors are elected by Blackpool people and answer to Blackpool alone, for schools, roads and social care. Reorganisation would abolish the council and fold the town into an authority of around half a million, leaving Blackpool's 140,000+ residents a permanent minority, outvoted on decisions about their future. A town with some of England's deep deprivation and a distinct coastal economy needs a council that puts Blackpool first.
