Introduce primary legislation governing police use of Live Facial Recognition — 8 signatures. Status: rejected.
Police are deploying Live Facial Recognition without primary legislation, parliamentary debate or democratic mandate. This reverses the presumption of innocence. We call on Government to pause deployments and introduce proper legal safeguards now.
Unlike CCTV, LFR processes every face, regardless of suspicion, reversing the presumption of innocence. The Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner confirms facial recognition “by definition compromises human rights” and urgently requires primary legislation with independent oversight. Without it, police forces write their own rules and future govts inherit unconstrained powers. Extraordinary state capability requires extraordinary democratic legitimacy before it becomes irreversible.
