Close all bars and remove alcohol from the Palace of Westminster permanently — 6 signatures. Status: rejected.
MPs are voting on laws that affect millions of people’s lives. Green MP Hannah Spencer recently spoke out about smelling alcohol on colleagues heading into vote. In no other profession - hospitals, schools, banks - is drinking during working hours acceptable.
Parliament is a workplace, not a pub. Ordinary people go to work without access to subsidised bars and are expected to perform their jobs sober. Our elected representatives should be held to the same standard - or higher, given the importance of their decisions. Closing the bars sends a clear message: Westminster exists to serve the public, not to function as a private members’ club. End the sale and consumption of alcohol in the Palace of Westminster permanently.
