Introduce a mandatory, standardised classification system for accessible hotel rooms (e.g. Type 0–Type 5), with clearly defined minimum accessibility features for each category, and require this classification to be displayed at the point of booking.
Currently, there is no consistent definition of what an “accessible” hotel room includes. This means disabled people cannot reliably know whether a room will meet their needs before booking. Rooms described as accessible vary widely. In some cases, rooms lack sufficient space for wheelchair users, include unsuitable bathroom facilities such as baths instead of level-access showers, or have fixtures positioned in ways that make them unusable. This creates unnecessary barriers, reduces independence, and undermines the intention of the Equality Act 2010. A clear classification system would improve transparency, allow informed choice, and support consistent standards across the hospitality industry.
