Increase funding for research into coeliac disease and treatment options — 133 signatures. Status: closed.
Coeliac disease affects around 1 in 100 people in the UK (~650,000 people). This condition causes the immune system to mistake gluten as a threat and so damages the small bowel and intestines. Currently, the only recommended treatment is to 'simply' avoid gluten, which may prove difficult for many.
I urge the Government to increase its funding of research into the disease to find treatment options for these issues which affect so many people in the UK. With the prevalence of gluten, it is very difficult to not come into contact with it. There are no treatments available for any accidental ingestion of gluten - e.g. no EpiPen equivalent - nor any treatment available to re-educate the immune system.
